Area farmers and ranchers turned out this morning for a high yield meeting at Hefty Seed in West Point this morning.
Georgia farmer Randy Dowdy is a high yield winner, with 500+bu/acre corn and 170+bu/acre soybeans. He says getting the perfect stand is a major part of that.
Dowdy says some Midwest farmers are lazy.
“There’s no reason why some of the highest yields in the country shouldn’t come from the Midwest. Some of the best soils, with some of the mild temperatures and with premium sunlight , long days and water….I tell farmers….most farmers are lazy in the Midwest. They have the best soils on the planet and they’re used to growing 200 bushel corn and really not doing a whole lot to do that. They have some great soils and some great opportunities. Deviate outside the norm. Quit doing what they’ve always done. Quit doing just the same thing daddy always did. Maybe there are better ways to do things. They need to listen and be open minded.”
