Creighton volleyball sweeps
VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Creighton Volleyball improved to 17-6 with a 3-0 sweep in its first meeting with Villanova on Friday night. All three set scores favored Creighton by identical 25-21 margins.
Creighton remains tied for second in the BIG EAST with Xavier at 8-3 in league play, two games behind Marquette (10-1). CU owns the tiebreaker with the Musketeers after winning both meetings earlier this year.
"I thought we played a solid match in all facets of the game tonight," said CU head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "We served very well, our blocking and defense were good and I thought our offense did a great job in dig transition. Any road win is great...and to do it with a sweep is even better."
Leah McNary led all players with 12 kills to pace CU, while Kate Elman topped the Jays with 11 digs. Lauren Smith had a hand in eight of CU's 12 blocks, and Ashley Jansen had 29 assists in her first career start at setter. Creighton hit .269 and had 42 kills, two aces, 40 digs and 12 blocks.
Villanova (12-12, 4-7 BIG EAST) was paced by 11 kills from Lauren Carpenter, while Mariah Henley had 20 digs. Emma Pettit, daughter of former Nebraska head coach Terry Pettit, had 31 assists, two digs and two kills for 'Nova. The Wildcats had 36 kills, two aces, 45 digs and five blocks.
Creighton returns to action on Saturday at 6 pm with the program's first meeting at Georgetown.
