Baier makes cut
Colorado Springs, Colo. - Nebraska men's gymnast Wyatt Baier has qualified for the 2012 Visa Championships after finishing 16th overall and 12th among non-Senior National Team Members at the U.S. Men's National Qualifier. A total of 14 athletes qualified for the Visa Championships based on their performances at the Qualifier, which was held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
"I had a really great meet," Baier said. "This is the first time I have ever qualified to the Visa Championships and I am proud to represent Nebraska on the national level."
Fellow Husker Eric Schryver finished 20th overall and 15th among non-Senior National Team Members, placing him just outside automatic qualification but still within range of qualifying for the Visa Championships. Baier and Schryver were joined in competition by NU's Wyatt Aycock and Josh Ungar at the Qualifier.
Baier began competition in the second session of the qualifier, competing on floor exercise, still rings, vault and parallel bars. The junior's work on the day was highlighted by a huge 16.10 on vault, good for second overall in competition. Baier added marks of 14.15 on floor, 12.90 on rings and 13.55 on parallel bars for an overall score of 56.700. Baier scored a total of 28 points on the 20 point system, putting him at 16th overall and allowing him to qualify for the Championships.
Schryver finished just outside automatic qualification at 20th overall, including a 10th-place finish on pommel horse (14.00) and a 13th-place finish on parallel bars (14.30) for a 20-point total of 23. Ungar posted a finish of 48th overall, including a finish of 15th on high bar at 13.40. Aycock came in at 52nd in competition, finishing 20th on both vault (15.20) and parallel bars (14.10).
The 2012 Visa Championships will be held in St. Louis, Mo. on June 7-10. Approximately 42 athletes will be invited to compete in the senior division of the competition. The current U.S. Senior National Team members have already automatically qualified for competition. The competition field is then rounded out by adding up to 12 competitiors from the 2012 NCAA Championships and the 14 selections from the U.S. Men's National Qualifier.
If positions still remain after these spots are filled, additional qualifiers may be selected from the U.S. Men's National Qualifier. Because of this selection system, Schryver may still be selected for competition at the Visa Championships after finishing 15th in qualifying competition.
The 2012 Visa Championships will serve to determine the qualifiers for the U.S. Olympic Trials on June 28-July 1 in San Jose, Calif. Tickets are currently available for both the National Championships and the Olympic Trials.
