McDermott named Player of the Week
OMAHA, Neb. -- For the fifth time this season and 10th time in his career, Creighton University junior Doug McDermott has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week.
McDermott averaged 27.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists in two victories last week, extending Creighton's win streak to 10. He made 21-of-27 shots from the floor (77.8 percent), including 5-of-7 shots from downtown (71.4 percent), and was also 8-of-9 at the foul line (88.9 percent).
McDermott's week began with 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists in a 91-61 win vs. Drake. He scored nine points in the opening six minutes as Creighton bolted to a 17-2 lead, and had 14 points in the first 11 minutes as the Jays went on top, 37-10.
On Friday night, McDermott helped Creighton to a 5-0 league start with 39 points and 10 rebounds, the nation's only game this season of 39 or more points and 10+ rebounds. McDermott started 1-for-4, then made his next 14 shots from the floor while carrying his team to victory. His 39 points were seven more than the JQH Arena record, and he scored all of CU's points in an 18-5 run to start the second half that helped CU build on a 32-27 halftime lead.
Off the court last week, the 6-foot-8 junior was named Midseason National Player of the Year by Seth Davis (CBS/Sports Illustrated) and Andy Katz (ESPN) and was the league's only representative on the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 List.
McDermott's 10 Player of the Week honors are second-most in league history, just four behind Bradley's Hersey Hawkins. Including his seven MVC Newcomer of the Week honors in 2010-11, McDermott has won at least one weekly award from the MVC in 17 of 42 weeks since enrolling at Creighton.
Ranked 10th and 12th nationally, Creighton (16-1, 5-0 MVC) returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Northern Iowa (9-8, 2-3 MVC) in a 7:05 pm contest at CenturyLink Center Omaha.
