First year coach Jeremiah Luber got his first win as the skipper of the Westco Zephyrs last night, downing previously unbeaten Douglas, Wyoming by the final of 6-4 at Cleveland Field.
We had coverage of the game on KNEB.tv, Allo 15, and Mobius 1500.
Douglas struck first, scoring an unearned run in the 3rd inning, and making that hold up until Westco scored five unearned runs of their own in the 6th inning on three singles and a pair of Douglas errors.
Douglas came right back with a pair of runs in the 7th to make it 5-3, and then added another run in the 8th, to cut the margin to one.
The Zephyrs got an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th for the 6-4 win.
Both teams finished with eight hits.
Douglas committed four errors and the Z’s committed five.
Chase Lovercheck and Paul Panduro paced the Zephyrs with eight hit attack with a pair each. Panduro drove in three runs, while Jack Jones scored twice after walking three times.
Westco left 13 runners on base, including two each in the first three innings. So, clearly they had plenty of scoring opportunities.
Trent Richter provided stability on the mound. The veteran righty worked 7 innings, allowing 6 hits, 3 runs (only one earned), while striking out 12 and not walking anyone.
Douglas falls to 6-1 while the Zephyrs are now 1-3.
Westco travels to Fort Morgan, Colorado for a 1 p.m. start on Sunday afternoon.
