Western Nebraska Community College’s Barbara Briceno helped the No. 2 Cougars to a 6-0 record last week and in turn was recognized by the NJCAA as the Division I Player of the Week.
Briceno, a 5-foot-11 hitter from Peru, was awarded the first Player of the Week honor of the season that was released on Wednesday.
Briceno had a big week helping the Cougars to that 6-0 record, including defeating No. 1 CSI in four games and No. 4 Iowa Western in five games at the Reiver Invite in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where the WNCC went 4-0.
WNCC opened up the season on April 22 when they defeated Western Wyoming and Laramie County Community Colleges.
Briceno’s stat line was quite impressive. Briceno had 27 kills in a win against Highland and had four matches where she had double-doubles — Western Wyoming 15 kills and 10 digs, CSI 19 kills and 11 digs, San Jac 14 kills and 23 digs, and Iowa Western 14 kills and 15 digs. For the six games, Barbara hit .338 while finishing with 106 kills, 72 digs, and eight solo blocks.
Briceno and the rest of the Cougars will look to stay unbeaten when they take part in the Crystal Inn Invite at Salt Lake Community College Friday and Saturday.
The Cougars open play at 10 a.m. Friday against No. 15 Missouri State-West Plains and then No. 1 College of Southern Idaho at 2 p.m. MSU-West Plains toppled No. 9 Tyler Junior College last weekend.
Saturday’s schedule is just as difficult as they open up at 9 a.m. against Snow College followed by a 11 a.m.contest against No. 5 Northwest College out of Powell, Wyoming.
After this weekend, the Cougars return home to host Eastern Wyoming College on September 7 at 7 p.m.
