Wayne State men hit century mark in win over Barclay College

Wayne State College used 55 percent shooting to hit the century mark in posting a 100-58 victory over Barclay College of Kansas Friday evening in non-conference men’s college basketball at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The Wildcats are now 2-1 on the year while the visiting Bears fall to 0-8.

The Wildcats sprinted out to a 16-6 lead at the 15:22 mark of the first half following a fast break layup by Matt Thomas.

Barclay closed within four at 16-12, but the Wildcats went on a 16-2 run over the next 4;23 to take a commanding 32-14 lead with 9:31 to play in the half following a fast break dunk from junior Vance Janssen.

Wayne State finished the first half with a 51-27 lead, making 20 of 34 shots for 58.8 percent.

The Wildcats put the game out of reach early in the second half with a 22-4 run for a 73-31 lead following a Trevin Joseph 3-pointer and the Wildcat reserves dominated play the rest of the way as 13 of 14 players scored in the game giving Wayne State a 100-58 win.

Wayne State finished the game making 37 of 67 shots for 55.2 percent, including 11 of 26 behind the arc. WSC was 15 for 24 at the charity stripe.

Kendall Jacks led WSC in scoring with 16 points, going 7 for 7 from the field and 2 for 2 at the charity stripe. Trevin Joseph and JJ Zumbrennen also hit double figures with 13 points apiece.

Barclay College connected on 21 of 52 shots for 40.4 percent, going 7 of 18 from 3-point range. The Bears made 9 of 11 free throws.

Randall Smith Jr. led Barclay with 11 points followed by Dre Thompson with 10.

Wayne State held a 39-28 advantage in rebounding thank to eight boards from Brian Goodwin and Tony Bonner. The Wildcats doubled Barclay on points in the paint 48-24 and had a 30-9 advantage in points off turnovers thanks to forcing 25 turnovers on Barclay while WSC had 12.

Goodwin had six of Wayne State’s 20 assists in the contest while Zumbrennen was credited with three of the Wildcats’ 16 steals.

Wayne State will open Northern Sun Conference play at home Monday evening hosting Augustana in an 8 p.m. contest in Rice Auditorium.
