Wayne State drops contest at Minnesota State

Minnesota State scored three first half goals and added another in the second half to post at 4-0 Northern Sun Conference women’s soccer victory Friday afternoon over Wayne State College at The Pitch in Mankato, Minnesota. The host Mavericks are now 6-3-1 and 5-3 in the NSIC with the win while WSC falls to 6-3-2 overall and 3-3-2 in league play.

“Minnesota State brought their “A” game today and really played well,” remarked Wildcat head coach Bruce Erickson. “Part of how we played had a lot to do with the pressure they put us under. We will move on quickly and get ready for Concordia-St. Paul Sunday.”

The Mavericks scored at the 7:32 mark of the first half to take a 1-0 lead and added goals in the 22nd and 26th minutes for a 3-0 lead at intermission.

MSU added one more goal at the 63:14 mark in the second half to close out the scoring for the 4-0 win.

Minnesota State finished with an 18-8 advantage in shots over Wayne State (8-5 in the first half and 10-3 in the second half) while holding an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. Wayne State did have a 3-2 edge in corner kicks with Minnesota State being called for offside seven times in the contest. MSU was called for seven fouls to just two on WSC.

Valerie Hernandez had two shots (one on goal) while Sophie Ketchmark was also credited with two shots to lead Wayne State. Christina Stasi had the other shot on goal for the Wildcats.

Senior goalkeeper Kylie Comba made four saves in the contest.

Wayne State will be at home Sunday afternoon hosting Concordia-St. Paul in a 1 p.m. NSIC contest at the WSC Soccer Pitch.
