Pittsburg State posted victories of 12-2 and 10-3 Tuesday afternoon to sweep a non-conference college baseball doubleheader over Wayne State College at Al Ortolani Field in Pittsburg, Kansas. The host Gorillas improved to 13-5 with the two wins while dropping the Wildcats to 2-8.

In the opener, the Wildcats avoided a shutout scoring two runs in the seventh inning as Pittsburg State pitchers Brad Kinsey and Ethan Vanderpool limited WSC to just five hits in a 12-2 Gorilla victory.

The host team scored three runs in the second for an early 3-0 lead.

The score stayed that way until the fifth when Pittsburg State struck for four runs and another three in the sixth for a 10-0 lead.

Wayne State, held to just two hits through six innings of play, avoided the shutout in the seventh inning as Jake Lorenzini’s two-out double scored Kyle Thompson (single) and pinch hitter Colin Chick (single). Pittsburg State added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the game on the 10-run rule by a score of 12-2.

Pittsburg State had 13 hits in the win while holding WSC to five. Lorenzini had a two-run double while Travis Miller added a double. Peyton Barnes, Thompson and Chick each singled.

Starter Isaac Rubendall (0-1) was one of five Wildcat pitchers in the game and suffered the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) in four innings of work with three walks and three strikeouts. Adam Poldberg, Gabe Hoogers, Max Ploof and Dalton Smith also saw time on the hill in the contest.

The second game saw the host Gorillas strike for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to break open a close game as Pittsburg State completed the sweep

Pittsburg State scored single runs in the first and third innings with two in the second to hold a 4-0 advantage after three innings.

WSC got back into the contest with three runs on three hits in the fourth inning. Lorenzini doubled and crossed home plate on a Andrew Hanson double to center field. Bryce Bisenius laced an RBI single that scored Hanson with the second run while Miller had a sacrifice fly that scored Tanner Simons (walk) with the third run.

The score remained 4-3 until the bottom of the sixth when the Gorillas scored six runs off Wildcat starter Hunter Wienhoff and relievers Aidan Breedlove Spencer Johnson to increase their lead to 10-3.

Pittsburg State outhit WSC 13-5 in the second game. Hanson had two doubles, an RBI and run scored for the Wildcats. Lorenzini doubled while David Janes and Bryce Bisenius each singled.

Starting pitcher Hunter Wienhoff suffered the pitching loss, falling to 0-2 on the season. He pitched five innings and allowed six runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts. In relief, Breedlove was charged with three runs on three hits while Spencer Johnson worked one inning and gave up one run on two hits.

Wayne State resumes play on Saturday, March 17th when the Wildcats open Northern Sun Conference play hosting the University of Mary in a noon doubleheader at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne.
