Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska Kearney wrestling team is ranked second in the Division II National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) preseason poll. This poll is a tournament power index (TPI) ranking as teams receive points for individuals ranked. UNK has five among the 10 weight classes, good for 69 points and the number two ranking. The next poll will be released in about a month. St. Cloud State, having won three of the last four national titles, is preseason No. 1 with 92 points.
The Huskies have eight individuals ranked among the 10 weight classes including three in the top two. Right behind UNK is Notre Dame (Ohio) College with 67 points and McKendree (Ill.) University at 59 points. Individually, four returning Loper All-Americans are nationally ranked in senior Zach Stodden (5th/174 lbs.), junior Jarrod Hinrichs (3rd/285 lbs.) and sophomores Matt Malcom (1st/157 lbs.) and Josh Portillo (3rd/125 lbs.). Fifth-year senior Calvin Ochs, who medically redshirted last season, is third at 165 pounds. He is a two-time All-American, once at 165 (2017) and once at 174 pounds (2016). UNK has finished in the top four at the NCAA Championships each of the past seven seasons and hasn’t finished lower than eighth since 2001. The Lopers start the regular season this Saturday, November 3, at the University of Wyoming’s annual Cowboy Open.
