Iowa State’s Schaben Named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State outside hitter Jess Schaben was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday morning. The award is Schaben’s second of the season, her first career Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week win and her seventh career Big 12 weekly honor.

Schaben is the fourth different Cyclone to win Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week this season, joining four-time winner Hali Hillegas and one-timers Alexis Conaway and Grace Lazard. The Cyclones join the 2013 Kansas Jayhawks as the only Big 12 teams to have four different players named Big 12 Defensive Player of the week in the same season.

Schaben also became the 11th different Cyclone to earn a Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week. Since the award’s inception in 2007, ISU has won Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week 53 times. The next-highest total is Kansas at 21.

The junior from Defiance, Iowa was quiet in attack in ISU’s regular season finale against Texas Tech, recording eight kills in the sweep of the Red Raiders. However, she had a career day in defense as she recorded a career-high 23 digs in the win. It was the third 20-dig match of her career, but the first to come in a match that had fewer than five sets.

For the week, Schaben led the Big 12 with 7.67 digs per set.

Schaben and the No. 22 Cyclones will be back in action on Friday at Hilton Coliseum in the first round of the NCAA Volleyball Championship against Princeton. First serve between the Cyclones and Tigers will be at 7 p.m.
