Leavenworth, KAN. – York split the doubleheader against the University of St. Mary Spires on Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers took game one 7-3 before falling in game two 3-1.
Matt Nunes (JR/Fowler, Calif.) and Luke Jackson (SR/Escondido, Calif.) led the offense in the first game going 3-for-5 and 2-for-3, respectively. Nunes batted in two runs, while Jackson knocked in three. Jackson got things started in the first inning as he hit a two-out two-RBI single. Travis Turner (SR/Selah, Wash.) scored on an error to quickly make it 3-0. However, in the bottom of the frame, the Spires answered back with three runs of their own.
Vincent Valentine (SR/Folsom, Calif.) gave York the lead for good in the second has his groundout scored Tre’ Bradley (JR/Lewistown, Mont.) from third. DB Vidal(SR/Livermore, Calif.) scored a batter later as Nunes singled to left.
York scored another run in the fourth and another in the eighth as they finished four runs up 7-3.
Casey Wagnon (SR/Fresno, Calif.) earned the win going five innings and allowing just one earned run. He struck out six batters while walking two. Garrett Ewing(JR/Liberty, Mo.) pitched the final four innings earning the save. He struck out four batters and walked two.
Offense was hard to come by in the second game for the Panthers. York was only able to garner six hits in seven innings as they fell 3-1. Lawyer Braun (SR/Federal Way, Wash.) and Luke Jackson were the only Panthers to get multiple hits. Each was credited with two apiece. Ethan Lanz (SO/Littleton, Colo.) batted in Braun on a sacrifice fly to center. That was the only run for York. The Spires tied the game in the bottom of the inning and then capitalized on four hits in the fourth inning scoring two runs for the lead.
Kelly Fromm (SR/Puyallup, Wash.) was credited with the loss as he gave up two earned through four innings.
York is set to host Southwestern College this weekend in a three-game series. The doubleheader is set for Saturday, with a single nine-inning game on Sunday. Both days the games will start at 1:00 p.m.
