Omaha Women sign four
Neil Baker leaves Bayard for Torrington

OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha women’s basketball coach Brittany Lange announced the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent Wednesday.  Akili Felici, Abby Johnson, Sarah Schmitt and Kia Wilson will join the Mavericks in the fall of 2019.

“We are thrilled to add these four young ladies to our program,” Lange said.  “Each signee brings a unique skill set in different positions to our team, along with impeccable character.  This is a strong Midwest signing class that will provide depth and 3-point shooting to our team.”

Akili Felici
G – 5-10 – Bellevue, Neb. – Bellevue West

Felici is a 5-9 guard who plays at Bellevue West High School.  As a junior, she was named to the Class A All-State Second Team, after averaging 15.8 points per game.  She set school records with 11 3-pointers and 41 points in a game against Omaha Bryan.  Felici also is a two-time All-Metro selection.  Her father, Dave, was a four-year letterwinner on the men’s basketball team at Omaha from 1979-83.

Felici played travel basketball for the Omaha Sports Academy Gauntlet.

Coach Lange on Felici:  “Akili has Omaha pride in her blood and is a hometown kid whose best basketball is in front of her.  She has great vision, a knack for shooting the ball and putting up big numbers.  She will add a fiery competitiveness to our team.”

Abby Johnson
F – 6-1 – Eden Prairie, Minn. – Eden Prairie

Johnson is a 6-1 forward from Eden Prairie High School.  Last season, she averaged 8.5 points and 3.1  rebounds per game for the Eagles en route to her second all-conference award.  Johnson also is a four-year letterwinner and two-time state champion lacrosse player.

Johnson played travel basketball for the Minnesota Fury.

Coach Lange on Johnson:  “Abby is a very talented defender and has the ability to stretch the floor at the four position.  Her length, athleticism and IQ provides a tremendous amount of upside and is a perfect fit for our style.  Abby is a great teammate and will only get better.”

Sarah Schmitt
PG/SG – 5-8 – Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Cedar Rapids Prairie

A three-time all-conference selection, Schmitt is a 5-8 guard from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  She averaged 13.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists last season for Cedar Rapids Prairie High School as the Hawks finished 16-7 overall and were regional finalists.  Schmitt is a three-time all-conference and an all-metro selection.  She also is a three-year letterwinner on the Prairie track & field team.

Schmitt played travel basketball for Iowa Barnstormers, and her team captured titles at the Nike Tournament of Champions and the USJN Windy City Classic.

Coach Lange on Schmitt: “Sarah provides consistency and has great feel for the game offensively.  She is a very good shooter that can score in the mid-range as well.  Her maturity and love for the game will be a huge asset for our team!”

Kia Wilson
C – 6-1 – Manhattan, Kan. – Manhattan High School

Wilson is a 6-1 center who plays at Manhattan High School.  Last season, she averaged 10.9 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.  She is a two-time Kansas 6A State All-Tournament selection and earned the Distinguished Junior Class Athlete Award at Manhattan High School.  She also is a three-year letterwinner for the Manhattan volleyball team.

Coach Lange on Wilson:  “Kia is off the charts in toughness, intangibles and potential.  She is a strong, mobile post player with great hands that understands winning.  She makes her teammates better and will always be in the mix to compete.”
