OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women’s basketball team fell 78-33 to South Dakota on Wednesday at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
Leaders for Omaha
Sophomore Emily Petersen finished with a team-leading 11 points with a trio of 3-pointers. Sophomore Claire Killian added nine points, three rebounds and three steals. Freshman Josie Filer grabbed a game-high 10 points.
Leaders for South Dakota
Taylor Frederick led five Coyotes in double figures with 14 points on 6-for-6 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers. Chloe Lamb added 13 points and seven rebounds, while Live Korngable scored 11 points. Allison Arena and Hannah Sjerven each scored 10 points.
South Dakota shot 45.6 percent (31-of-68) from the field and 46.2 percent (12-of-26) beyond the arc while holding the Mavericks to 25.0 percent (13-of-52) for the game. The Coyotes had the advantage on the glass 40-32.
Inside the First Half
South Dakota shot 55.6 percent (20-of-36) with 8 treys in the first half with Frederick leading the way with 10 points and three boards at the break. Petersen, Sophie Johnston and Mariah Murdie each had two points to lead Omaha. The Jackrabbit closed the half on a 17-2 run, taking a 50-6 lead into the locker room.
Inside the Second Half
An 11-0 scoring run extended the USD lead to 68-10 late in the third quarter. Omaha opened the fourth quarter with a 16-2 run, sparked by a trio of Petersen 3-pointers and five points by Killian. Omaha shot 35.7 percent (10-of-28) in the second half and held South Dakota to 34.4 percent (11-of-32).
Omaha is now 7-16 (1-9 Summit League) on the season, while USD improved to 21-3 (9-1).
Omaha returns home on Saturday, Feb. 9 to host Western Illinois. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Baxter Arena.
