Omaha Volleyball loses in five at Purdue Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Sydney Case recorded her first-career triple-double in the five-set loss at Purdue Fort Wayne Friday night.

Despite being up two sets, the Mavericks dropped the next three to fall to the Mastodons by a score of 25-18, 25-23, 16-25, 23-25, 14-16.

Notes

  • Case (43 assists, 11 digs, 10 blocks) became the first Mavericks since Michaela Schimmer (vs. South Dakota, Nov. 13, 2013) to record a triple-double in a match.
  • The match marked the first since Sept. 7, 2017 vs. Drake that the Mavericks fell in a match after being up two sets.
  • Omaha splits the regular season matchup with Purdue Fort Wayne and falls to 5-11 in the all-time series.

Leaders for Omaha
Along with Case’s triple-double, Isabella Sade had 14 kills on .500 hitting and eight blocks, while Claire Leonard had 13 kills. Sadie Limback tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 13 digs to go with seven blocks.

Leaders for Purdue Fort Wayne
Nicole Rightnowar had a match-high 26 kills and 10 digs while Madison Jaqua had 50 assists.

Inside Set 1
A 6-2 Omaha run helped the Mavericks gain the spark it needed in the set. Despite the Mastodons cutting the set to one point (16-15), Omaha was able to close the set on a 9-3 run and take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Inside Set 2
Omaha withstood a 5-0 Purdue Fort Wayne run midway through the set and regained a 15-14 lead. Later on, the Mavericks were down three (19-16) but clawed back and gutted out a 25-23 set victory to lead 2-0.

Inside Set 3
Purdue Fort Wayne sparked a 9-1 run that put Omaha in a six-point deficit early in the set. The Mavericks cut the Mastodon’s set lead to seven, but could not muster the comeback as Purdue Fort Wayne cruised to a 25-16 set win and force a fourth.

Inside Set 4
Omaha led by as many as four (12-8) early in the set, but Purdue Fort Wayne countered with a 5-0 run and took over the lead. Down three late in the match, Omaha tied it at 20-all off a kill from Sade. In a back-and-forth set, the Mastodons edged Omaha 25-23 and force a fifth.

Inside Set 5
The Mavericks led by as many as four (12-8) in the final set, but saw the lead dwindle away. A 6-1 Mastodon run out of the timeout gave them the lead. Omaha could not put itself in position to take the match point, as Purdue Fort Wayne closed out the victory with a 16-14 win off a pair of kills by Madelyn Wurster.

Omaha looks to bounce back this Sunday, Oct. 21 against North Dakota State. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. inside Baxter Arena.
