MACOMB, Ill. – Omaha volleyball rallied back from a two-set deficit to defeat Summit League foe Western Illinois in five sets on the road Tuesday evening.
The Mavericks beat the Leathernecks (20-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-20, 15-4) to improve to 16-11 and 11-4 in league play.
- The last time Omaha won a match after being down two sets was against IUPUI in the semifinal round of The Summit League Championship on Nov. 21, 2015 (23-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-12, 15-9).
- Omaha improves to 10-4 over Western Illinois in the all-time series and completes the season sweep.
Leaders for Omaha
Sadie Limback had a match-high 16 kills to go with nine digs, followed by Isabella Sade, who had 13 kills. Anna Blaschko and Abby Bergsten followed with 11 kills apiece. At setter, Sydney Case had 46 assists.
Inside Set 1
Omaha led 7-6 early on, but three straight points by WIU made it 9-7. Later in the set, another 4-1 Leatherneck spurt put the Mavericks in a four-point hole that they could not get out of. Western Illinois took the first set 25-20.
Inside Set 2
With the score tied at 15-all, Omaha fell into a three-point deficit off a short Leatherneck run. Down 24-18, the Mavericks scored three straight to trail by three, but the Leathernecks secured the set point off a kill to go up 2-0.
Inside Set 3
Omaha knew it had to claw back and five straight points sparked by a Limback kill did just that. Up 12-4 in the set, the Mavericks kept the foot on the gas pedal and went up by double digits. Despite three straight WIU points late in the set, an ace by Limback sealed the first set victory for the Mavericks.
Inside Set 4
Down one early on, five straight Maverick points made it 9-5 Omaha capped off by another Limback ace. Western Illinois came back to tie the score at 14-all, but a crucial 6-0 run by the Mavericks made it 23-16. From there, Omaha was able to even the match up off a kill by Sade to make it 2-2.
Inside Set 5
Omaha jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the final set and never looked back. A kill by Sade sparked a 9-0 run that put the Mavericks up 14-3. The final match point came off the arm of Sade as she sealed the come-from-behind victory for Omaha on the road.
Omaha sets its sights on the final regular season match for 2018. The Mavericks take on Oral Roberts Sunday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. in Tulsa, Okla.
