Omaha Men lose big at New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Omaha men’s basketball team played its third game in five days Tuesday night, falling 103-71 to New Mexico at Dreamstyle Arena as part of the Emerald Coast Classic. The Mavericks are now 0-3 on the season, while the Lobos improve to 2-0.

Leaders for Omaha
Juniors Zach Jackson and Mitch Hahn paced the Mavericks with 16 points apiece and three 3-pointers. Jackson added seven rebounds, an assist and a steal, while Hahn had two boards, an assist and a steal.

Sophomore JT Gibson added 12 points, five rebounds and a team-high four assists, and senior Daniel Norl registered another double-figure scoring effort with 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Senior Daniel Meyer also pulled down seven rebounds, and freshman Ayo Akinwole had a team-leading three steals for the night.

Leaders for New Mexico
New Mexico was led by 24 points from Troy Simons, who hit six 3-pointers and added five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Antino Jackson had 19 more points on five treys, Sam Logwood had 18 points and five boards, and Joe Furstinger rounded it out with 11 points.

Team Stats
New Mexico shot 44.2 percent (34-of-77) to Omaha’s 38.6 percent (22-of-57). The Lobos drained 17 threes in the game and had a 48-37 rebounding advantage, including 19-9 on the offensive end. UNM forced 26 Maverick turnovers, scoring 39 points off miscues.

Inside the First Half
New Mexico opened to an 8-0 lead on 4-of-5 shooting in the first two and a half minutes, but a Hahn jumper stopped the run. Omaha later committed three costly turnovers as the Lobos surged ahead to their largest lead of the half at 19-9 with 11:36 left.

The Mavericks then put together an 8-0 run that brought them within two at 19-17. With 7:27 left, Hahn drained a three to reach double figures and cut the Lobo lead to 24-22. Omaha finally took its first lead of the night, 26-24 with 4:55 to go, courtesy of a Norl layup and two Jackson free throws. The Lobos held a 35-34 advantage at the half.

Inside the Second Half
Omaha tied it once more at 37-37 on a Hahn triple with 18:40 to go and remained within striking distance until UNM went up by double digits, 68-57, on a Chris McNeal three with 9:21 left. Simons hit four-3-pointers in the half for the Lobos, who built a 92-61 lead on the back of a 29-4 scoring stretch.

After shooting 4-of-20 from long range in the first 20 minutes, UNM put together a 13-of-19 onslaught behind the arc in the second stanza en route to the 103-68 final score.
