OMAHA, Neb. – Isaiah Madrid’s goal in the 25th minute proved to be the difference as Valparaiso beat the Omaha men’s soccer team, 1-0, Monday night. The loss moved the Mavericks to 4-4-3 overall while the Crusaders improved to 6-2-2.
Madrid broke a deadlock at the 24:35 mark of the first half, converting a penalty kick after a Maverick foul in the 18-yard box.
Omaha came close to leveling the score in the closing seconds of regulation on a corner kick. Fazlo Alihodzic’s kick found the head of Elvir Ibisevic who headed it toward the goal. Valparaiso goalkeeper Nico Campbell was able to smother the shot before it crossed the line to preserve the 1-0 Valpo lead.
Omaha outshot Valparaiso 19-5 overall and 5-1 in shots on goal. Alihodzic led the team with six shots with one on frame, and Ibisevic had five shots. Mark Moulton took three shots and had a team-best two on target.
Omaha wraps up a four-match homestand on Saturday, Oct. 8, welcoming Eastern Illinois to Caniglia Field at 2 p.m.
