OMAHA, Neb. — The Omaha volleyball team lost in four sets (25-22, 25-18, 18-25, 25-19) to Kansas State Thursday night in the opening match of the Omaha Challenge at Baxter Arena. With the loss, the Mavericks fall to 3-8 (0-0 Summit League) on the season, while K-State improves to 6-5 (0-0 Big 12).
Leaders for Omaha
Sophomore Meagen Roth led the way for the Mavericks, posting 10 kills and 15 digs to go along with two blocks. Junior Abby Bergsten also recorded a double-double for Omaha, accounting for 11 kills and 13 digs. Senior Sydney O’Shaughnessy led the team with a season-high 21 digs to pair with her team-leading 34 assists in the match.
On defense, freshman Anna Blaschko led Omaha with six blocks, while freshman Claire Mountjoy tallied 17 digs. Fellow freshman Bella Sade led the Mavericks with three aces alongside six kills, three blocks and five digs.
Leaders for Kansas State
Bryna Vogel led the charge for the Wildcats, tallying 12 kills and 16 digs for a double-double. Kylee Zumach matched her with 12 kills, and Peyton Williams had 11 more with a .556 hitting efficiency. Libero Reilly Killeen grabbed a team-high 21 digs for the night.
Kansas State had the edge with .196 hitting, while the Mavericks hit at a .136 clip. Omaha outblocked the Wildcats, 9-8.
Inside Set 1
The Wildcats jumped out to an early 6-3 lead in the opening set, but two K-State attack errors and a Bergsten kill knotted it. After the Wildcats regained the lead, a kill by Blaschko brought Omaha within two at 15-13. Later, down 20-16, Omaha rallied with a 3-0 run capped by a Sade kill to pull within one. Another Sade kill made it 21-20, and a Wildcat attack error stalled it again at 21-21. The Mavericks grabbed the lead at 22-21 with a KSU attack error, but a kill by Brooke Smith and a Maverick miscue gave the Wildcats a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Two kills by Williams and Zumach sealed the first set for K-State, 25-22.
Inside Set 2
K-State jumped out to a 12-9 lead in the second set and extended its lead to 15-9 until an O’Shaughnessy kill ended a 3-0 Wildcat run. KSU took its largest lead at 21-13 and matched it again at 23-14. The Mavericks rattled off three straight points from there, topped off by consecutive kills from Roth and O’Shaughnessy. But a Zumach kill gave KSU the set, 25-18.
Inside Set 3
Omaha flew to an 8-5 lead on an ace by sophomore Gessica Gdowski, but back-to-back Wildcat kills brought the score to 8-7. A kill by Bergsten gave the Mavericks an 11-10 advantage, and a Sade ace extended it to 14-12. Roth later put down a kill to give the Mavericks a 17-12 lead, which they extended to 20-14 on kills by Blaschko and Roth. Gdowski spotted the Mavericks a 21-15 advantage on a Gdowski kill, and another score by Bergsten made it 23-17. A pair of Wildcat attack errors nailed down Omaha’s third-set win by a tally of 25-18.
Inside Set 4
K-State assumed an early 7-3 lead on a kill from Zumach and an Omaha attack error. Trailing 13-9, a kill by Roth trimmed the deficit to three. Back-to-back service aces by Sade made the score 16-15, but three kills helped the Wildcats to a 4-0 run for a 20-15 lead. A Gdowski kill stopped the spurt, but two straight kills KSU made their lead 22-16. A kill by Bergsten made the score 23-18, but two final Maverick attacking miscues gave the Wildcats the set at 25-18 and the match, 3-1.
