Northeast Men and Women split with Iowa Western

NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College men’s basketball team battled Iowa Western Community College in their final game before holiday break. The Hawks grabbed a massive victory by a final score of 83-72.

The Hawks (7-7, 1-3 ICCAC) trailed by as many as eight in the first half and were down seven at halftime, but they fought and clawed all night and were completely dominant in the second half.

Collin Storr (Nassau, Bahamas) was all over the court for Northeast as his 26 points, 19 rebounds and six blocks totaled for one of the most-dominant performances that that the Cox Activities Center has seen this year.

The Hawks shot 53.8-percent from the field in the matchup and held the Reivers to just 35.5-percent shooting.

Head men’s basketball coach Dan Anderson on Collin Storr‘s big day:

“This is what Collin is very capable of doing,” Anderson said. “We need Collin to do this every ballgame. It’s starting to come around. He’s very capable of doing this. It was an outstanding performance. He’s very deserving of it.”

Anderson on where his team is at as they head to break:

“I think we’ve gotten better from day one to game 14,” Anderson said. “I see us making improvements. I see us taking charges now. I see us rebounding better. We are making good in-game fixes. We’ve cut down on fouls. It’s good that they are leaving with a good attitude for break. It feels better that you win. I like the direction that we are going.”

The Hawks will be off until they battle Iowa Central Community College at 7 p.m. Wednesday, January, 4 at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.

NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College women’s basketball team closed out their 2022 calendar year by hosting No. 8 Iowa Western Community College. The Reivers prevailed in the showdown by a final score of 73-45.

The Hawks (8-5, 2-2 ICCAC) only trailed 12-11 after the first quarter but Iowa Western took a 33-23 lead into the halftime break. The Reivers kept the pressure up in the second half as they pulled away from Northeast down the stretch.

The Hawks shot just 11.1-percent from three in the contest as they will now head into the holiday break.

Head women’s basketball coach Matt Svehla on today’s matchup:

“We just had a hard time controlling Iowa Western on the boards and we just seemed out of sync offensively,” Svehla said. “Some of that was good defense on their part, but we were really stagnant with our ball movement. Hopefully the break gives us a chance to recharge.”

Northeast won’t be in action again for a few weeks until they take on Iowa Central Community College at 5 p.m. Wednesday, January, 4 at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.
