Northeast earns sweep of Central

NORFOLK, Neb. – A strong start and a powerful finish were the keys to success for the Northeast Community College women’s volleyball team on Friday, cruising to a three-set victory (25-12, 25-22 and 25-18) over Highway 81 rival Central Community College at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.

The Hawks (11-6, 4-0 ICCAC) went to work in the first set, tallying 16 kills and only three errors on 32 attempts. Despite getting out of rhythm in the second set, Northeast got back on track in third, recording 12 kills on 34 attempts.

“Tonight we came out on top and played like we can play,” head coach Amanda Schultze said. “The girls stayed focused on the goal and were very successful. During the second set, we got out of system and struggled a little to get back to playing our game, but with some hard work, we were able to finish strong.”

Sophomore setter Savannah Nelson (Wakefield, Neb.) tallied her 500th assist of the season, adding to her career total of 1,772. Kalli Brester (Howells, Neb.) recorded 11 kills and 10 digs, good for a double-double. Gabriela Barbosa (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) pitched in 11 digs, while Megan Wehrbein (Lewiston, Neb.) had nine kills.

The Hawks return to action when they hit the road on Wednesday, facing off with Iowa Central Community College at 7 p.m. in Fort, Dodge, Iowa.
