ELKHORN, Neb. – The Northeast Community College baseball team made the short trip to Elkhorn, Nebraska Wednesday afternoon to take on McCook Community College. The Plainsmen came out on top in the duel by a final score of 7-1.

The Hawks (8-5) got on the board first in the top of the second inning as Rusty Wortman (Gretna, Neb.) doubled to bring in Kaden Young (Columbus, Neb.), but that would be the last Northeast run of the day. Christian Carew (Parker, Colo.) pitched the first two innings for the Hawks and then Northeast got six other pitchers work as Clay Beaumont (Tekamah, Neb.), Eli Crnkovich (Valley, Neb.), Nick Vilims (Evergreen, Colo.), Gage Ingram (LaVista, Neb.), Gabe Rodriguez (Thornton, Colo.) and Aidan Brainard (Littleton, Colo.) all tossed an inning in relief.

The Hawks will have a chance to even up the season series with McCook in just seven days as they will host the Plainsmen at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Norfolk Veterans Memorial Field in Norfolk.

STAT SHEET:

Rusty Wortman (Gretna, Neb.): 2-2, 2B, RBI

Kaden Young (Columbus, Neb.): 1-4, R

Gabe Rodriguez (Thornton, Colo.): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH:

Head baseball coach Marcus Clapp on what didn’t work today:

“Offensively, we have to stick to our approach,” Clapp said. “When we get away from it, that’s what happens. We score one run. Overall, I thought we pitched okay. Had a couple of bad innings, obviously. Two innings cost us seven runs, and that’s the game.”

Clapp on what will be emphasized before heading to Oklahoma:

“We have to stick with our approach and we have to have a plan going into every at-bat,” Clapp said. “If we do that, and we take care of the ball defensively, we are going to be alright.”

UP NEXT:

Northeast will head back to Oklahoma next week for the second time on the young campaign as they will battle Northwestern Oklahoma St. University JV and Southern Nazarene University JV at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday in Alva, Oklahoma.
