Central Methodist edged Morningside 3-2 in a tightly contested volleyball match where all five sets were decided by margins of two points in Friday’s action at the Clarke University Quadrangular in Dubuque, Iowa.

Central Methodist raised its record to 25-3 after Friday’s 23-25, 26-24, 23-25, 26-24, 15-13 triumph. Morningside will take a 14-6 record into Saturday contests against Missouri Valley and host Clarke.

The Mustangs’ loss against Central Methodist overshadowed some standout performances by freshmen Brittni Olson, Emma Gerber, and Gabby Roe.

Olson, a prep all-stater last year at Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School, hammered a match-high 21 kills for the Mustangs’ highest kill total of the season. Olson had only three errors in 35 attack attempts to finish with a .514 hitting percentage. Aside from her offensive exploits, Olson was also the Mustangs’ defensive leader at the net with a match and season’s high four solo blocks.

Gerber, a freshman from Worthington, Minn., also had her most productive outing of the campaign with a season’s high 18 kills to top her previous best of 14 terminations against Grace last Friday.

Roe, a freshman from Sioux City, had her top totals of the season with 16 digs and a match-high 42 assists. Roe had her first double figure dig total of the season and her 42 assists was just one shy of the Mustangs’ top individual total so far this season.

Ashley Vande Stouwe hammered 10 kills to join Olson and Gerber in double figures. Jayde Bergmann was next with eight kills.

Morgan Gourley led the Mustangs’ defensive court coverage with a season’s high 17 digs. Roe was right behind with 16, followed by Nikki Oberfoell with 13 for her 16th consecutive match in double figures.
