Morningside scored one of its biggest volleyball victories of the season when it rebounded from an opening set loss to defeat visiting Northwestern 21-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-21 on Wednesday in Sioux City.

The victory came against a Northwestern team that has been receiving votes in the NAIA Volleyball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. Morningside raised its record to 14-5 overall and climbed to 5-4 in the GPAC to overtake Northwestern for fifth place in the conference standings of one of the NAIA’s premier volleyball leagues. Northwestern had its GPAC ledger leveled at 4-4 and slipped to 12-13 overall.

Jenn Buyert hammered a match-high 19 kills at the Red Raiders to equal the Mustangs’ top total of the season. Buyert also had 19 kills earlier this season in a 3-1 triumph against Dakota Wesleyan. Brittni Olson also had a big night on the attack with 11 kills and also led the Mustangs’ defensive wall at the net with seven block assists.

Jayde Bergmann just missed a double figure performance with nine kills and Emma Gerber also just missed with eight terminations, while Ashley Vande Stouwe and Morgan Whitehead contributed six and five kills, respectively, to the Mustangs’ attack.

Nikki Oberfoell came up with another big effort on the defensive front with a match-high 27 digs for her second highest total of the season. She was joined in double figures by Katie Kuck with 15 digs, while Gabby Roe had nine digs to go along with a team-high 32 assists.

Callie Alberico added 16 assists and Jessica Becker had both of the Mustangs’ ace serves.

Morningside will travel to Dubuque, Iowa, this weekend to compete in Friday and Saturday quadrangular at Clarke University.
