Morningside scored its biggest volleyball victory of the young season when it rallied from a 2-1 deficit to upset No. 25 Jamestown 25-19, 25-27, 24-26, 25-21, 15-9 on Thursday in Sioux City.
The Mustangs raised their record to 5-1 and avenged this season’s only defeat against a nationally ranked Jimmie team that had handed them a 3-1 setback at last weekend’s Northwestern Red Raider Classic. The Mustangs moved within three wins of their entire victory production from last year in an 8-20 campaign.
Morgan Whitehead hammered 12 kills to match a career high she also had against Mount Marty last season. Jayde Bergmann also finished with 12 kills, while Brittni Olson had 11 terminations and a .345 hitting percentage.
Ashley Vande Stouwe just missed twin figures with nine kills and a team-high .529 hitting percentage. Jenn Buyert was next with seven kills, ending a streak of 14 consecutive double figure kill performances dating back to last season.
Nikki Oberfoell paced the Mustangs’ court coverage with 22 digs to match her season’s high. Katie Kuck was right behind with 18 digs. Morgan Gourley also made double figures with 11 digs.
Taylor Ferguson led the Mustangs with 16 assists to go along with eight digs and two ace serves. Fellow setters Brittany Fleming and Callie Alberico added 15 and 11 assists, respectively.
Jess Becker led the winners with three ace serves while completing 25 of 26 serve attempts.
Olson led the Mustangs’ blocking effort with one solo and five block assists, while Buyert had two solo blocks and two block assists.
Morningside will play its GPAC opener with a 7:30 p.m. home match against Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday, Sept. 7.
