Morningside unable to bounce back against Doane

The Morningside Women’s Volleyball team was unable to get back into the wins column as it traveled to Crete, Neb. to face the Doane University Tigers.  Morningside fell in straight sets, 25-23, 30-28, and 25-22. The Mustangs are now 12-11 on the season and 6-7 in the GPAC with just three contests left before the postseason tournament.

“There were too many times we played with a lack of confidence tonight. At this point in the season, we should know how good we are, but tonight we couldn’t close any of the sets out, despite multiple opportunities,” reflected Morningside Head Coach, Beth Donnelly.  “ If we want to play past the GPAC season, we are going to have to play consistently aggressive volleyball and not just spurts of it.”

Morningside and Doane were very evenly matched throughout the evening.  The visitors tallied 42 kills, 35 assists, 71 digs, and six team blocks in the match, while Doane had 49 kills, 45 assists, 68 digs, and six team blocks.

The Mustangs were led on the attack by sophomore Krista Zenk with 13.  Her .314 hitting percentage was second to Brittni Olson’s .333. Olson, a junior, tacked on five kills for Morningside.  Also in double digits, was junior Madison Hartman, with 10.

Defensively, freshman Kayla Harris led Morningside with 19 digs.  Zenk had 13 digs and assisted on three blocks. Sophomores Merrin Van Velzen and Ashley Boer wrapped up the Mustangs reaching double digit digs, each with 12.

The Mustangs are back on the road on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 7:30, as they visit Concordia University of Seward, Neb.  They’ll be back home on Saturday when No. 14 Hastings College comes to town.
