Morningside’s volleyball team made it five wins in its last seven matches with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-9 sweep of Grace University in Friday’s non-conference match in Sioux City.

The Mustangs improved their record to 13-4 heading into a Saturday GPAC contest against No. 1-ranked Midland in Fremont, Neb.

The Mustangs have been one of the top blocking teams in the nation all season and Friday’s match against Grace was no exception. Morningside had 12 blocks to negate the Royals attack, leaving the guests with a miniscule .019 hitting percentage. Brittni Olson, Clare Kortlever, and Jenn Buyert each contributed six block assists to the Mustangs’ imposing front wall.

It was a milestone match for Mustang senior Katie Kuck, who came up with seven digs in the victory to raise her career total to 1000 digs. Kuck became the 18th player in Morningside history to reach the 1000-dig plateau.

Emma Gerber and Jenn Buyert were the big hitters in the Mustangs’ attack. Gerber slammed her way to a match and season’s high 14 kills. Buyert, who was coming off a season’s high 19-kill performance in a Tuesday victory at Dakota Wesleyan, was right behind with 12 terminations. Olson was next with eight kills and only one error in 16 attack attempts to finish with a match-high .438 hitting percentage.

Freshman setter Gabby Roe dealt a match-high 21 assists and riddled the Royals’ court coverage with four ace serves, while fellow setter Callie Alberico had 18 assists to go along with six digs.

Morningside’s Nikki Oberfoell came up with a match-high 16 digs for her 13th straight match in double figures. Kuck was next with seven digs.
