SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Amongst the many gifts, words of appreciation and recognitions delivered and given to Rebecca Riley (SR/Gothenburg, NE) (Gothenburg, Neb.), Andrea Nulle (SR/Manning, IA) (Manning, Iowa) and Paige Lansink (SR/Manilla, IA) (Manilla, Iowa) Sunday, April 28, the two most important items earned were results at the conclusion of the Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader.
Head coach Jessica Jones-Sitzmann’s Class of 2019 trio, already a part of so many sparkling Mustang memories over their playing careers, was involved in a sweep of the University of Jamestown at Jensen Family Softball Complex. Each of them forged their names on the stat sheet, as Riley drilled a grand slam in the nightcap first inning; Nulle was on the basepaths in game two, and Lansink shut the door on the visitors with one inning of work from the bullpen in the second contest.
Their teammates pitched in plenty of assistance. Pitcher Hallie Misiaszek (SR/Mitchell, SD) (Mitchell, S.D.) struck out five and didn’t allow an earned run in game one as part of the 6-2 decision and then came back in the second match-up with six additional frames of shutout activity and five more Ks to aid in a 7-1 victory. At the plate, freshman Ellie Cropley (FR/Sioux City, IA) (Sioux City, Iowa), sophomore Carson Cameron (SO/Herman, NE) (Herman, Neb.) and freshman Josie Baxter (FR/Lincoln, NE) each tallied two hits in game two, and junior Ashton Whited (JR/Elkhorn, NE) (Elkhorn, Neb.) and freshman Morgan Nixon (FR/Omaha, NE) (Omaha, Neb.) both homered in the opener with Whited’s two-run blast to center sparking a five-run fourth inning rally.
Morningside (25-8 overall, 18-4 GPAC) hosts a section of the 2019 GPAC Championships Thursday and Friday, May 3 and 4. Complete information will be available at www.msidemustangs.com.
