GRAND PRAIRIE, TEX. – Three one-run finals out of five games in the Lone Star state characterized Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2, for Morningside College.

Head coach Jessica Jones-Sitzmann’s squad got their stay at the Southern Collegiate Sports’ NAIA Invitational off to a strong start, toppling McPherson College of Kansas 8-7 in the first outing Friday. Sophomore designated player Jayden Wood (SO/Gretna, NE) (Gretna, Neb.) laced a three-run double as part of a four-run first, while freshman Morgan Nixon (FR/Omaha, NE) (Omaha, Neb.) and senior Rebecca Riley (SR/Gothenburg, NE) (Gothenburg, Neb.) finished with two hits apiece. Senior hurler Hallie Misiaszek (SR/Mitchell, SD) (Mitchell, S.D.) turned in a workmanlike performance, going the distance with three strikeouts. She was touched for only one earned run.

The rest of the five-game slated turned difficult for the Maroon. Their 5-0 season start was turned aside by four successive defeats, three of which occurred by a single run. Sophomore Lexie Stolen (SO/Sioux City, IA) (Sioux City, Iowa) drilled a two-run double to give Mside a 3-0 lead through three against Tabor College before a four-run comeback over the fourth and fifth frames sent them to a 4-3 loss; Misiaszek came back with a six-strikeout gem against Bethel but the Threshers plated the deciding run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly for a 2-1 decision; and Kansas Wesleyan University held off the Mustangs 6-5 in eight innings. Their final appearance at Jennifer McFalls Park was against top-ranked Oklahoma City University which ended with an 8-1 defeat, as sophomore Carson Cameron (Herman, Neb.) rapped a pair of hits.

Morningside (5-4) is scheduled to continue their season Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9, at McPherson College’s Invitational.
