SIOUX CITY, IOWA – As close to perfection as a day could be.
Sunny skies, a large crowd circling Jensen Family Softball Complex, two more superb pitching efforts from senior Hallie Misiaszek (SR/Mitchell, SD) (Mitchell, S.D.) and offense galore … the recipe for a 6-1 win over College of St. Mary of Nebraska and a 9-1, six-inning roll past Concordia University of Nebraska Thursday, May 2.
Taking her 2019 mark to 19-3, Mside’s staff ace proved her recent Great Plains Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honor. She struck out seven Flames and took a perfect game into the top of the sixth in the opener versus the seventh seed and then came back to be nicked for just five hits by the third-seeded Bulldogs in a winner’s bracket collision. Misiaszek’s 18th and 19th complete games of the year which moved her current win string to five in a row was more than enough for an offense that came guns a-blazing from the beginning.
Sophomore Lexie Stolen (SO/Sioux City, IA) was the center of a 15-run, 22-hit blitzkrieg. The Sioux City native homered three times and drove in seven runs with her final round-tripper being of the walk-off variety against CU to end the contest due to the eight-run rule. Junior Cortney Joiner(JR/Carlisle, IA) (Carlisle, Iowa) and freshman Ellie Cropley (FR/Sioux City, IA) (Sioux City, Iowa) each supplied two hits against CSM, while Cropley came back with three hits and a leadoff home run, and freshman Morgan Nixon (FR/Omaha, NE) (Omaha, Neb.) blasted a homer among a two-hit outing versus Concordia.
Morningside, going to 27-8, climbed into the championship section of their home bracket of the 2019 GPAC Championships. They will face the winner of the Concordia-Mount Marty College of South Dakota elimination game Friday, May 3, at 2 p.m. A victory would put them in the overall tournament championship series Saturday, May 4.
