Morningside Men win at Mount Marty; Women upset

YANKTON, S.D. – A warm breeze pushed Morningside north toward Mount Marty College and Yankton, S.D. on Saturday afternoon as the Mustang men were hoping to pick up another win over the team that relaunched their winning streak.  The Mustangs were victorious, though by a much slimmer margin of 68-56.

Morningside traded blows with Mount Marty throughout the first half of the game with the Mustangs taking the lead for good with just over a minute left to play thanks to a Tyler Borchers(JR/Le Mars, IA ) jumpshot.

Morningside held the lead for the entire second half, though that’s not to say that it was always safe.  Mount Marty had the lead shaved down to two points as the clock approached the four minute mark. Zach Imig (SO/Gretna, NE ) went to the charity stripe with 4:00 on the clock and sank both of his free throws.  Brody Egger (SR/Urbandale, IA) and Tyler Borchers did the rest of the scoring for either team, collecting the last eight points in the game.

The Mustangs were led in scoring by Tyler Borchers with 20 points.  Egger added 16, with Imig and Matt Hahn (JR/Fremont, NE ) wrapping up the double digit scorers with 11.  Trystan Cummins(JR/Ankeny, IA ) led the reserves with six points.

Borchers and Hahn were each a rebound shy of reaching a double-double, collecting nine caroms each.  Trey Brown (SO/Gretna, NE ) collected eight rebounds after coming off the bench.

Morningside shot just shy of 36% from the field, making 20 of 56 baskets.  It went 5 of 29 from beyond the three-point arc while hitting 23 of 30 free throws.  The Mustangs had 40 rebounds, seven assists, and three blocks and turned the ball over just six times in the contest.

The GPAC leading Mustangs advanced to 22-1 overall and 15-1 in the conference.  They’re back in action on Wednesday, February 6 at 8:00 p.m. when the Concordia Bulldogs visit Allee Gymnasium and the Rosen-Verdoorn Sports Center.

YANKTON, S.D. – The Mount Marty women were looking to even the season series and avenge a 26 point loss when Morningside came to town on Saturday, February 2nd.  The Lancers managed to pull off the upset in a game that went back and forth from the initial tip until the final buzzer, edging the Mustangs, 62-57, in the visitors’ final regular season trip to South Dakota.

Morningside built an 11-10 lead as the two teams headed back to their benches at the quarter mark.  Mount Marty didn’t go away, though, tying the game at 29 in time for the break at the half.

This remained the pattern of the second half until the Lancers stretched out to a 9 point lead with just over eight minutes to play in the fourth quarter.  The Mustangs would whittle the lead down to as few as three with just under four minutes to play before Mount Marty hit a three to keep things out of reach for Morningside.

The Mustangs were led in scoring by Sydney Hupp (JR/O’Neill, NE) with 17 points.  Sierra Mitchell(SO/Pleasant Hill, IA) had nine after being held quiet in the first half.  Jordyn Moser (JR/Harlan, IA) tallied eight, as did Tayte Hansen (SO/York, NE) after coming off the bench.

Hupp also led Morningside in the rebounds column, with six.  Mitchell and Faith Meyer(SO/Pomeroy, IA ) each had five.

The Mustangs shot 31% as a team, hitting 21 of 67 field goals, and made 9 of 14 free throws.  Morningside had 33 rebounds, 10 assists, and 8 steals while only turning the ball over 12 times.

Morningside is now 18-8 on the season and 10-8 in the GPAC heading into its final regular season homestand featuring No. 1 in the nation Concordia and crosstown rival Briar Cliff.  The Bulldogs visit on Wednesday, February 6 at 6:00 p.m., with the Chargers making the trip on Saturday, February 9 at 2:00 p.m.
