HONOLULU, HAWAII – A day after roaring past the Concordia University of Michigan by nearly 40 points, head coach Jim Sykes’ Morningside College Mustangs got a stern test from the Cardinals Thursday, Dec. 20.
The second-ranked team on the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ Division II poll trailed by as much as five throughout the first and second halves until a 13-0 run at the midway point of the second half turned the contest in their favor. Concordia answered with an 11-0 run of its own to set a frenetic finish in which a clutch three-point bucket from sophomore guard Zach Imig (SO/Gretna, NE ) (Gretna, Neb.) gave the Mustangs a 63-61 edge with 2:04 left; the Maroon went three-for-four from the charity stripe; and junior forward/center Tyler Borchers(JR/Le Mars, IA ) (LeMars, Iowa) blocked a potential game-tying lay-up at the buzzer to lock up a 66-64 decision.
Borchers led the scoring attack with 12 points which were only part of the story. He also blocked three CUAA shot tries and grabbed five rebounds. Imig finished with 12 points and six boards and also picked up four steals, and junior guard Alex Borchers (JR/South Sioux City, NE ) (South Sioux City, Iowa) added 10 points and dished out five assists. Egger and junior forward Ben Hoskins(JR/Wayne, NE ) (Wayne, Neb.) tallied nine each, as Hoskins drilled three treys.
