Midland men’s soccer ties Benedictine

ATCHISON, Kan. – The Midland University men’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw at Benedictine College on Wednesday night in a non-conference match. The Warriors knotted the game late, but a winner could not be decided after 110 minutes of action.

Benedictine, winners of a 1-0 match at Midland last season, came out as the aggressor early on Wednesday and scored just 10 minutes into the contest. The athletic Ravens squad controlled the tempo in the first half, but the Warriors were able to match the intensity as the game wore on.

Midland trailed by one goal at halftime before Ali Sodal knotted the score at 1-1 in the 65th minute. The senior scored on a penalty kick.

The match remainder scoreless for the remainder of regulation, and a pair of 10-minute overtime periods also went by without a goal.

Cesar Valverde recorded five saves in the tie game.

Midland held a 13-12 edge in shots while putting five on goal.

The Warriors will hit the road on Friday for a pair of games in Whiting, Indiana over the weekend. Midland will face a tough task in No. 13 Union College on Saturday at 3 p.m. before taking on tournament host, Calumet College of St. Joseph, on Sunday morning.
