YORK – York College defeated Concordia University for the first time since 2007 by a score of 2-1. Arturo Gutierrez III (FR/Hacienda Heights, Calif) scored the game winner in the 81st minute after finding some space at the top of the penalty area. Two quick moves around defenders and he took a shot to the near post that Bulldog goalkeeper Jack Bennett could not stop.
The Panthers took the lead in the 35th minute after a poor pass in the defensive third by the Bulldogs was intercepted by Johan Rodriguez(SO/Texas City, Texas). Rodriguez laced his shot to the side of the goal for the lead. York would hold the lead the remainder of the half.
In the second half Concordia controlled the ball a little more and created several opportunities to tie the game. In the 64th minute David Carrasco scored on a cross by Jack Arra that was the equalizer. The Bulldogs had a couple more chances but the Panthers were able to get the game winner on a counter attack with less than ten minutes to play in the game.
Coming into the contest the Panthers had lost the previous ten games against the Bulldogs. Head coach Alex Latorre was very please with his team’s effort saying “we fixed a lot of things between Saturday and today. Our game against Briar didn’t look good and we struggled with our shape. Today was a lot better against a solid team.”
York has a week and a half off until September 8 when they host Dakota Wesleyan.
