Iowa State Volleyball sweeps Kansas

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State rolled to its third-straight win with a 3-0 (27-25, 25-18, 25-22) sweep of Kansas Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum. The win improves ISU to 15-13 overall and moves the Cyclones into a tie for third in the Big 12 at 8-7. KU falls to 15-11 overall and 8-7 in league play.

Eleanor Holthaus had one of the most efficient hitting nights by a Cyclone in program history, notching 13 kills at a career-best .722 hitting, the sixth-best mark in school history. Jess Schaben had 11 kills and nine digs. Up front, the Cyclones were led by five blocks (one solo, five assists) by Candelaria Herrera.

Set One: Iowa State 27 Kansas 25
Jess Schaben’s first trip behind the service line resulted in a 5-0 run which included an ace to push the Cyclones ahead 9-5. KU bounced back to tie the set at 10-10 and pulled ahead with a 5-0 run to make it 15-13 Jayhawks. The Cyclones were back ahead on a Schaben kill at 19-18. Despite the best efforts of Ashley Smith, who provided the Jayhawks with 10 kills in the first set, the rest of her team struggled to put the ball down, as the Cyclone offense surged to .357 hitting for the frame. KU held off ISU’s first two set points, but the third was the charm as Smith was stuffed by Eleanor Holthaus and Grace Lazard at 27-25.

Set Two: Iowa State 25 Kansas 18
The Jayhawks snuck ahead briefly at 7-6, but the Cyclones responded with a 7-2 run to get ahead 13-9. KU brought the ISU advantage down to a point at 14-13 and 16-15, but Iowa State was able to surge to a 3-0 run to get some breathing room at 19-15. The Cyclone serve was a big contributor to the effort, finishing with three aces in the frame, while the attack was good again hitting .300. ISU reached set point at 24-18, and put it away on first asking when Candelaria Herrara blocked Gabby Simpson at 25-18.

Set Three: Iowa State 25 Kansas 22
Iowa State got off to a strong start, with the blocking pushing ISU ahead 7-3. However, the Jayhawks responded by tying the set on four occasions, but could never get ahead. Lazard’s trip behind the service line put ISU back in control with a 4-0 run to move ahead 16-12. Kansas did not go away easily, pulling back within one at 23-22. Lazard brought up match point with a kill at 24-22, and put it away on first asking when Gabby Simpson fired long at 25-22.

Player of the Match
Eleanor Holthaus. The freshman was outstanding yet again, as she fired off a tidy 13 kills with no errors on 18 swings for a .722 hitting percentage. The effort is tied for the sixth-most efficient in school history, and the second-best by a freshman in ISU history. She also recorded two blocks and a dig during the match.
