AMES, Iowa – Iowa State advanced to the second round of National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) with a 3-0 (25-16, 27-25, 25-22) win over Drake Thursday night at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones advance to tomorrow night’s second round of the NIVC against Bradley. The match will be at 6:30 p.m. inside Hilton Coliseum.
ISU is now 17-13 overall, while Drake finishes its season at 21-15. The Cyclones were led by 18 kills and 14 digs by Jess Schaben, while Grace Lazard added 10 kills at .389 hitting. The Cyclone defense held Drake to .176 hitting, guided by 13 digs from libero Izzy Enna.
Set One: Iowa State 25 Drake 16
Grace Lazard’s first rip behind the service line resulted in two aces and a 5-0 run to push the Cyclones ahead 10-4. Jess Schaben ripped through the Bulldogs, producing six kills on her first six swings to push Iowa State ahead 16-9. The ISU defense stiffened up as the set went along, as the Cyclones notched 3.0 total blocks to hold Drake to .111 hitting. ISU moved ahead 1-0 when Hannah Bailey fired a kill of the Bulldog block at 25-16.
Set Two: Iowa State 27 Drake 25
Drake bounced back strong to start the second, with Elle Tubbs recording a pair of aces to lead a 5-0 run which pushed the visitors ahead 8-2. After a couple of false starts to the rally, the home team began to turn the corner with a 4-0 run capped by an Eleanor Holthaus kill at 14-12 DU. The Cyclones’ second push came with another 4-0 run with Lazard and Piper Mauck’s block knotting it at 18-18. Iowa State finally moved ahead via a big back-row kill by Schaben at 20-19. Schaben’s 15th kill took ISU to set point, and the Cyclones got it on the third asking when Natalie Fry fired wide at 27-25.
Set Three: Iowa State 25 Drake 22
The Cyclones immediately took control via Lazard, who ripped off four-straight kills to push ISU to a 5-0 lead. Drake was able to slowly rally its way back into the set and was able to tie things up at 18-18 on a Lazard hitting error. Schaben moved ISU back ahead on a back-row kill at 20-19, and that was enough to get ISU home. Holthaus and Candelaria Herrera teamed for a block to bring up match point, and ISU put it away on the second try when the duo combined again for a block at 25-22.

Jess Schaben. The senior finished in double figures for kills in her 13th-straight match, recording 18 kills at .382 hitting. She also picked up her 16th double-double of the season with a match-high 14 digs.
Iowa State will take on Bradley in the second round of the NIVC Friday at 6:30 p.m. inside Hilton Coliseum.
