Iowa State sweeps Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kansas – Iowa State wrapped up the first half of Big 12 play with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-16) sweep of No. 22 Kansas Saturday afternoon at the Horejsi Center. The win pushes ISU above .500 on the year to 11-10 and 4-4 in Big 12 play. KU drops to 13-6 overall and out of the Big 12 lead at 6-2 in league play. Kansas was swept for the first time this season.

The Cyclones were led by 11 kills at a season-best .357 hitting percentage from Jess SchabenEleanor Holthaus had seven kills at .400 hitting and Grace Lazard and Piper Mauck had five kills each. ISU held KU to .075 hitting, led by six blocks from Candelaria Herrera and eight digs by Izzy Enna.

Set One: Iowa State 25 Kansas 16
Both sides struggled to find a rhythm on offense early. Kansas had a 5-2 advantage but the Cyclones used a 7-0 run behind the serve of Grace Lazard and the blocking of Candelaria Herrra to move ahead 12-7. Josie Herbst was next to use the serve to push ISU ahead, as she helped get the Cyclone lead to six at 17-11. Iowa State dominated in all facets, hitting .333 while using 4.0 total blocks to hold KU to a -.067 hitting clip. Jess Schaben got her fourth kill of the set out of the back row to give ISU the first 25-16.

Set Two: Iowa State 25 Kansas 23
Iowa State got off to a slow start, as Kansas fired ahead to a 7-1 lead. The Cyclones turned to their senior duo of Lazard and Schaben to get things rolling again. Schaben went behind the service line to fire off a 6-0 run which put ISU back ahead at 11-9. After being shutout in the first, Lazard got rolling in attack with a trio of kills during the run. The Cyclone block again dominated proceedings, getting another 4.0 total blocks to hold KU to .088 hitting on the set. Despite KU going on a 5-0 run on set point, Iowa State moved ahead 2-0 when Schaben killed out of the back row at 25-23.

Set Three: Iowa State 25 Kansas 16
The Cyclones led the whole way, getting out to a 3-0 advantage and never looking back. ISU started to get some aces, as Izzy Enna and Piper Mauck each got one to push the visitors ahead 10-6. Enna’s second ace of the set got Iowa State ahead 13-8, which was part of a 5-0 run to put the set and the match out of Kansas’s reach at 16-8. The Cyclones finished the third with four service aces, and two more blocks to finish with 10.0 total for the match. The visitors wrapped things up when Herbst got an ace to hit the sideline at 25-16.

Player of the Match
Jess Schaben. The Cyclones’ leader was outstanding in all aspects Saturday, leading ISU with 11 kills at a season-high .357 hitting percentage. She also posted seven digs and three blocks (two solo, one assist).
