NORMAN, Okla. – Iowa State (18-24, 1-8 Big 12) fell to No. 2 Oklahoma (34-2, 9-0 Big 12), 9-1 on Monday at Marita Hynes Field in the series finale. The Cyclones jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but were unable to contain OU’s explosive offense.

The Cyclones were able to strike first for the second time in as many games against the defending national champion Sooners, putting a run on the board in the top of the first inning. Iowa State, which also scratched out a run to begin game two of the series, is the only team to score against OU in the first inning this season.

Sensational sophomore Sami Williams got ISU started with a lead-off double to left center, her 11th double of the season. Sydnsey Stites then stepped to the plate in the two hole and laced an RBI base hit to left center as well, scoring Williams from second to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead.

Oklahoma responded, exploding for seven runs in the home half of the inning. The Sooners tallied four hits and three walks in the frame, including a pair of bases-loaded walks that brought OU’s first two runs home. A single through the left side by Lea Wodach then plated two more Sooner runs, extending the lead to 4-1. Fale Aviu finished the spurt off with a three-run home run to left center, giving Oklahoma a 7-1 advantage after one inning.

Shay Knighten added to the lead with a two-run shot in the bottom of the second, scoring teammate Jocelyn Alo.

Cyclone pitcher Brianna Weilbacher provided a quality performance in relief, giving up two runs on just three hits in 3.1 innings of action with a strikeout, but ISU’s offense was stymied after the first frame.

On Deck
The Cyclones will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa on Wednesday to take on UNI at 4 p.m.
