The Cyclones got the start they were looking for behind starting pitcher Emma Hylen and a solid defensive effort early. Hylen and the Cyclones held the Lady Bear offense scoreless through the first three innings, including a 6-4-3 double play to end the first frame.
Williams took the first pitch she saw in the bottom of the third and sent it flying high over the center field wall to put Iowa State on the board first. It was her 11th dinger of the season, tied third-most in a single season in program history. Her 11 home runs are the most in a season since Aly Cappaert also hit 11 in 2016.
However, it was all Baylor from that point forward, as the visitors put four runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Shelby Friudenberg tied the game with a solo home run down the left field line. Taylor Ellis later notched an RBI double, followed by an RBI single through the left side for Hannah Thompson, as BU went ahead 4-1.
The Lady Bears were back on offense in the top of the fifth, plating a pair of run on a two-RBI single down the left field line by Nicky Dawson, extending the lead to 6-1. An RBI on a ground out by Goose McGlaun with the bases loaded in the sixth extended BU’s advantage to 7-1.
The Cyclones notched six hits on the day, but were unable to score following Williams’ home run. Baylor ace Gia Rodoni pitched the complete game with nine strikeouts.
Hylen put in 5.0 innings of work, giving up six earned runs, while Brianna Weilbacher entered in relief for 2.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits.
Iowa State and Baylor will be back at the Cyclone Sports Complex for game two on Saturday. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
