AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (18-21, 1-5 Big 12) was defeated by Texas (19-13, 6-0 Big 12) in both games of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Texas won game one 8-0 by run rule, followed by an 11-4 Longhorn win in the series finale.

Texas infielder MK Tedder got the Longhorns started on the right foot, notching a two-run home run following a walk for Janae Jefferson, giving UT a 2-0 advantage out of the gates.

On the other side of the field, the Cyclone bats were silent in game one of Friday’s doubleheader, struggling to gain traction against Texas starting pitcher Paige von Sprecken. Iowa State was held scoreless by the Longhorn ace on two hits in five innings of action.

The Longhorns added to their lead in the second inning, as von Sprecken laced a two-RBI double to center field, scoring Janae Jefferson and Kaitlyn Slack.

Jefferson scratched out an RBI on a groundout to shortstop, scoring Ki’Audra Hayter from third in the top of the fourth inning, extending UT’s lead to 5-0. The Longhorns put the game away in the top of the fifth inning on a three-run home run off the bat of Bekah Alcozer.

The Cyclones looked to rally with back-to-back base hits by Sally Woolpert and Nychole Antillon in the bottom of the fifth, but were unable to scratch out a run to extend the game.

Junior pitcher Emma Hylen pitched all 5.0 innings for Iowa State, giving up seven earned runs on seven hits in the outing.

The Longhorns once again made the most of their opportunities in the first inning of game two on Friday. UT loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a single by MK Tedder, setting the table for Kaitlyn Washington with one out. The Texas sophomore answered with a grand slam to right field, putting Iowa State in a 4-0 hole early.

Texas added a run in the top of the third on an RBI single to left field.

The Cyclone offense came alive in the home half of the fourth inning, putting three runs on the board to claw back into the game. Antillon sparked the rally with a lead-off single. Woolpert then stepped to the plate and launched a two-run bomb to left field, her second home run of the season.

Kaylee Bosworth followed that up with a double to left field. With two outs, head coach Jamie Pinkerton called on Jackie Chairez to pinch hit, and the ISU junior came through with an RBI single to left center, cutting the UT lead to 5-3.

The Longhorns responded back with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth, including a lead-off home run by Kaitlyn Washington, and three in the top of the sixth, extending the lead to 10-3.

Bryn Hanrahn notched an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning, before Texas scratched out one final run in the seventh, winning 11-4.
