WACO, Texas – Iowa State (26-18, 3-8 Big 12) defeated Baylor (17-26, 2-13 Big 12), 4-0, on Friday night to clinch its first series win over the Lady Bears since 2003. The Cyclones were led by a vibrant outing from senior pitcher Savannah Sanders, who picked up the complete game win.
Sanders held Baylor scoreless while surrendering just four hits on the evening. Kaylee Bosworthcontinued her outstanding play on the weekend, going 2-of-4 at the plate, while Sydney Stites led the way with two RBI.
Iowa State 4, Baylor 0
The Cyclones were able to strike first thanks to a two-RBI double off the bat of Stites in the top of the third inning. Bosworth reached first on a Baylor error to open the frame, followed by Talyn Lewis reaching on a fielder’s choice. Stites then came to the plate with runners on second and third and crushed a two-out double to right center, giving Iowa State a 2-0 lead.
Junior Logan Schaben gave the offense more life in the top of the fourth, leading off the inning with a double to right center field. Hannah Carter then moved Schaben over to third with a sacrifice bunt, and Sami Williams collected an RBI with a sac fly, as Schaben raced home to extend the lead to 3-0.
Sanders and her defense were dominant in the third, fourth and fifth innings, retiring 10 consecutive Baylor batters during the stretch.
Sally Woolpert notched a double in the seventh inning, followed by an RBI single from Lewis to score pinch runner Kirsten Caudle from second, tacking on an insurance run. Sanders and company then slammed the door shut in the home half of the seventh, securing Iowa State’s first series win over BU since 2003.
The Cyclones return to Getterman Stadium for the series finale vs. Baylor on Saturday at noon.
