CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Iowa State (19-24, 1-8 Big 12) was victorious in a back-and-forth battle with UNI (20-16, 5-5 MVC), winning 10-7 in extra innings on Thursday night at the UNI-Dome. The Cyclones scored three runs in the top of the eighth to improve to 5-0 in extra-inning games this season.
Sydney Stites notched three RBIs and two doubles in the win, while Logan Schaben and Kaylee Bosworth each hit solo home runs to help push ISU past the Panthers.
Iowa State 10, UNI 7
Following a pair of scoreless innings, the Cyclones put together a two-out rally to open the scoring. Hannah Carter sparked the big ISU inning with a base hit up the middle with two outs. Sami Williams followed suit on a single through the right side, putting runners on first and second for Stites. The junior from Bozeman, Mont., put Iowa State on the board with an RBI double to right field, scoring Carter.
Taylor Nearad, a junior, then came to the plate and laced a two-RBI double to left field, plating Williams and Stites to extend the Cyclone lead to 3-0. It was Nearad’s team-leading 14th double of the season.
The Panthers responded, breaking out for six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take their first lead of the evening. UNI notched three hits, two walks and a hit batter in the frame. The first Panther run was plated on a bases-loaded walk by Adara Opiola. Courtney Krodinger then added a two-RBI single to cut ISU lead to 4-3.
Claire Dudek stepped to the plate with two outs and changed the outlook of the game with a 3-RBI inside-the-park home run to left field. Dudek’s hit gave UNI a 6-4 advantage through five innings of action.
The Cyclones battled back with three runs of their own in the top of the sixth. Sally Woolpert and Kaylee Bosworth got the offense started with back-to-back base hits before Logan Schaben loaded the bases with a walk. Senior Kaila Konz put the Cyclones back in front with one swing, ripping a three-RBI triple to left center to give Iowa State a 7-6 lead. It was the second triple of her career.
UNI was down to their final out in the bottom of the seventh, but knotted the game on an RBI single to center field by Tianna Drahn, sending the game to extra innings.
Bosworth gave Iowa State the lead for good with a lead-off bomb to left center field in the top of the eighth, her fifth home run of the season. Stites later ripped a two-RBI double to left center, scoring Sami Williams and Hannah Carter to put ISU ahead 10-7.
Iowa State returns home on Saturday for a doubleheader vs. Western Illinois. Game one between the Cyclones and Leathernecks is set for 1 p.m. at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
