Iowa State Men lose in final seconds to K-State

AMES, Iowa- Barry Brown made a driving shot with six seconds left to lift Kansas State (12-4, 2-2 Big 12) to a 58-57 win over No. 20 Iowa State (12-4, 2-2 Big 12) Saturday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.

With ISU leading 55-48 with five minutes left, Brown scored eight of KSU’s final 10 points in a crucial 10-2 run to finish the game. Brown led all scorers with 23 points.

The Cyclones were led by Nick Weiler-Babb, who had 11 points, five assists and four rebounds. George Conditt IV came off the bench to score nine points (4-of-4 FG) to aid the Cyclone effort.

How It Happened
Kansas State went into the break with a 35-26 lead, as the Cyclones struggled to find their groove offensively.

Brown drilled a desperation 3-pointer as the shot clock was winding down to give KSU its largest lead of the half at 32-22 with 2:39 remaining. The Wildcats made 6-of-11 shots from downtown, while ISU was just 3-of-12 in the opening period.

ISU’s 26 points was its lowest first half point total of the season.

The Cyclones opened the second half on a 14-5 run to tie the score at 40-40. ISU finally heated up from long range, as Talen Horton-Tucker hit a pair of treys, followed by bombs from Marial Shayok and Lindell Wigginton, as ISU opened the second period 5-of-8 from the field.

ISU then went cold again, missing six-straight shots to watch the Wildcats move ahead 46-41 at the second media timeout.

The Cyclones then went on a 14-2 run to take their first lead of the second half. Weiler-Babb hit a pair of 3-pointers in the run and Conditt IV had a monster put-back dunk to give the Cyclones a 55-48 lead with 5:01 remaining.

Two baskets by Brown in a 6-2 KSU run trimmed the lead to 57-54 with 2:04 remaining. Brown then made two charity shots to make it a 57-56 ISU lead with 0:16 seconds left.

Wigginton was fouled on the in-bounds pass, but he missed the one-and-one to set up Brown’s final shot.

ISU missed three front ends of one-and-one situations, including two in the final four minutes. ISU finished the game 6-of-12 from the charity stripe.

Players of Note
Nick Weiler-Babb posted 11 points, dished out five assists and grabbed four rebounds in the contest. His second 3-pointer of the second half (6:16) gave the Cyclones their first lead since the early moments of the first period.

He converted an “and-one” in the first half and his dunk with 8:27 left in the second period tied the score at 46-46. He was 4-of-4 from the field with four rebounds and two blocks.
