AUSTIN, Texas – Iowa State (11-8, 2-6 Big 12) was unable to rally past Texas (13-7, 4-4 Big 12) on Monday night at the Frank Erwin Center, as the Longhorns pulled away for a 73-57 victory.
The backcourt duo of Nick Weiler-Babb and Lindell Wigginton scored 15 points each, with Wieler-Babb chipping in four rebounds and three assists. Cameron Lard racked up another double-double, with 12 points and tied a game-high with 12 rebounds.
How It Happened
Texas jumped out to a 20-9 lead, knocking down four of its first six 3-point attempts, led by Kerwin Roach II, who was 4-of-4 from deep in the opening half. The teams traded punches through most of the first stanza, with Texas eventually stretching its lead to 15 at 36-21 with three minutes to play by way of a 11-2 run.
The Cyclones closed the half strong, cutting the deficit to 38-29 at the break on a basket by Lard. The freshman big man was a focal point for ISU, putting up team-highs of 10 points and five boards in the first 20 minutes.
Iowa State battled back, as Weiler-Babb got to the basket for a lay-up and then drilled a 3-pointer on back-to-back Cyclones possessions early in the second half, narrowing the UT lead to 49-43 with 13:23 to play. However, that was as close as ISU would get to erasing the deficit, as the Longhorns responded with seven-straight points.
Iowa State gave one last push with an 8-0 run after Texas had built its largest lead of the game at 65-49. The spurt was sparked by back-to-back triples from Wigginton and Donovan Jackson, but the Cyclones were unable to complete the comeback.
