Iowa State Men fall at Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – Iowa State (20-9, 9-7 Big 12) slipped to a 86-69 loss at Texas (16-13, 8-8 Big 12) Saturday afternoon at the Frank Erwin Center. Despite a strong start to the game, the Cyclones went on an eight-minute run in the first half without a field goal, and then saw Texas go on a strong shooting run in the second half, as the Longhorns shot 61.5 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes. UT hit 15 3-pointers for the second-straight game.

In defeat, Iowa State was led by 22 points from Marial Shayok, while Lindell Wigginton had 16 points. George Conditt IV came off the bench to record a career-high 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting and knotted his career best with four rebounds.

How It Happened
The Iowa State defense was a factor early, as the Cyclones forced four Texas turnovers they were able to turn into six points to push ahead 16-7. However, the Cyclones soon endured a prolonged scoring slump, going almost four minutes without getting on the board to allow UT to get ahead 22-20. ISU knotted it at the line at 23-23, but Texas went on a 12-0 lead to open up a 35-23 lead. During a stretch of 8:22 without a field goal, ISU committed five turnovers and missed eight-straight field goal attempts.

UT began the second period with a 12-point lead and the Longhorns came out firing as they upped the lead to 21 at 56-35 within the first five minutes of the second half. ISU finally found some offense halfway through the period, as a Shayok 3-pointer brought the Texas lead down to 15 at 66-51. However, Texas quickly recovered and within two minutes had its lead back up to 21 at 76-55.

The Longhorns continued to have a strong shooting day, as UT would finish the game with 15 3-pointers, the most allowed by ISU this season and only the third time in 2018-19 the Cyclones have conceded at least 10 treys.

Players of Note
Marial Shayok
led the Iowa State offense with 22 points, his 14th game of the season over 20 points and 27th game in double figures as a Cyclone. Shayok finished shooting 8-of-14 from the field.
