AMES, Iowa – Another challenging slate of matches awaits the Iowa State volleyball team in 2018 as head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch announced the Cyclones’ schedule for the upcoming season Wednesday. ISU’s schedule features 15 home matches, which includes visits to Hilton Coliseum by four 2017 NCAA Volleyball Championship squads and a pair of non-conference home tournaments.
For the fifth-straight season, Iowa State will begin the season at Hilton Coliseum, this year with the Iowa State Challenge. The Cyclones’ season begins on Friday, Aug. 24 at 6:30 p.m. against Ole Miss, the defending NIVC champions. ISU will then host a doubleheader the next day, Aug. 25, against Virginia (10 a.m.) and Oregon State (6:30 p.m.).
The Cyclones first road match will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 29 at UNI in Cedar Falls. The rivalry between the Cyclones and Panthers have frequently featured five-set marathons, with each of the past two seasons going the distance. Iowa State will be arranging a bus trip for fans on the day of the match, more info on that will come out closer to the season.
ISU then heads on the road for two-straight tournaments. Iowa State will head to Missoula, Montana to take part in a tournament that will feature the host Grizzlies, Gonzaga and Utah. The Cyclones then heads to Nebraska for a trio of matches the next weekend. ISU, Creighton and Wichita State will renew its triangular tournament in Omaha, with the Cyclones taking on the host Bluejays on Sept. 7, and the Shockers on Sept. 8. On Sunday, Sept. 9, Iowa State will make the trek to the Devaney Center in Lincoln to take on Nebraska.
The Cyclones close out the non-conference slate with a second home tournament, highlighted by the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series meeting with Iowa on Friday, Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m. ISU begins the Cyclone Classic on Sept. 13 against Wyoming, and will close it out on Sept. 16 against Syracuse.
Big 12 play will begin on the road this season, with the Cyclones playing at West Virginia on Wednesday, Sept. 19. ISU then comes home for its conference home opener on Sept. 22 against Baylor, with the Bears coming off a second-place finish in the Big 12 last season.
The conference schedule highlights include a busy Homecoming week, with ISU hosting Texas on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m., and then hosting Kansas State on Homecoming Saturday, Oct. 27. Iowa State will close the conference schedule with a pair of home matches, hosting Kansas on Wednesday, Nov. 21, and then having a Black Friday Senior Night match against Texas Tech on Nov. 23.
The NCAA Volleyball Championship First and Second Rounds will be Nov. 29-Dec. 1 on campus sites, with the Regional Rounds on Dec. 7-8 also on campus sites. The Target Center in Minneapolis will be the host of the NCAA Volleyball Championship on Dec. 13 and 15.
