Iowa Softball swept by Wildcats

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team (15-15, 1-5 Big Ten) dropped game three of its three-game set against Northwestern (25-7, 6-0 Big Ten), 6-0, on Sunday afternoon at Bob Pearl Field.

HEAR FROM COACH GILLISPIE

“We did a nice job today. You look at the difference of that game we had two hit-by-pitches. Five of their six runs the bases were given to them.”

“You see little improvements every day with this team. Today we had the bases loaded, but we weren’t able to get that key hit. Our outfield is playing great right now and we are looking to improve on our offense.”

HOW IT HAPPENED

Junior DoniRae Mayhew started the Hawkeyes off in the circle contributing two strikeouts in two innings of work before being relieved by senior Erin Riding.

Northwestern got on the board first, earning its first run of the game off a sacrifice fly in the second.

The Wildcats added onto their lead with a three-RBI single in the fourth inning.

Sophomore Sarah Lehman entered in the fifth. She was relieved by Mayhew to finish the inning and escaped a bases loaded jam with zero outs.

Iowa had an opportunity to get points on the board in the fifth with the bases loaded, but couldn’t score and entered the sixth down by four.

Senior Mallory Kilian looked to get things going in the sixth for the Hawkeyes with a single to right field but a double play ended the Iowa attack.

Northwestern added two insurance runs in the seventh, taking a 6-0 lead.

Freshman Miranda Schulte relieved Mayhew in the seventh, striking out two.
