Iowa Softball drops regular season finale to Buckeyes

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team (19-31, 5-18 Big Ten) fell to Ohio State (34-15 17-6 Big Ten), in game three of its three-game series, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon at Bob Pearl Field.

Following the game, Iowa honored seniors Erin Riding, Mallory Kilian, and Brooke Rozier.

“We would’ve love to have this game for the seniors, that was our goal to play hard and for them. We had the opportunities we just didn’t capitalize on them.”

“We are heading into the Big Ten Tournament, and that’s the fun part. We are going to take it one game at a time, and if you’re the champion of the Big Ten Conference then you head to regionals, it’s in our hands.”

Ohio State struck first in the second inning, scoring two runs with a stand-up triple down the right field line and a stand-up double to the left field wall. Both hits scored a run as Iowa fell behind 2-0 after two innings.

Iowa got a rally started in bottom of the fourth with hits from freshmen Cameron Cecil, on a single up the middle, and Abby Lien, who reached on a stand-up double, but both runners were left on base.

The Buckeyes extended their lead in the fifth with a RBI single to left field, and a RBI. Iowa trailed 4-0 after five innings.

Freshman Sydney Owens notched a single down the left field line in the fifth inning but was left on.

Iowa threatened in the sixth with junior DoniRae Mayhew drawing a walk, a single by Cecil, and a walk from junior Liz DeShields, but runners were left on.

Ohio State added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a RBI single to make the score 5-0.

The Hawkeyes couldn’t overcome the deficit and fell to the Buckeyes, 5-0.

Senior Erin Riding started in the circle for the Hawkeyes. Sophomore Sarah Lehman came in to pitch in the second inning and she finished the game.

The Hawkeyes travel to Bloomington, Ind., for the Big Ten Tournament next week. The tournament starts Thursday, May 9 and Iowa will face Wisconsin at 10:00 a.m.
