Howells native Nathan Bazata is a member of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Bazata, a 2013 graduate of Howells-Dodge High School was a three year starter at defensive tackle for the University of Iowa. He graduated from the Hawkeyes this past spring.
Bazata had a tryout with the Bucs in May, but wasn’t signed at the time. He was invited to an additional workout on Tuesday, August 7 and was signed to a rookie contract later that day.
Bazata looks to provide depth to the Bucs’ D-line, with top rookie Vita Vea missing a week with a calf injury. Other key injuries include William Gholston, with veteran Mitch Unrein getting hurt on Monday.
To make room for Bazata on the 91-man camp roster, the Buccaneers waived first-year cornerback David Rivers with an injury designation.
Bazata (6-1, 282) played in 47 games over his four seasons with the Hawkeyes, starting 37 of them, and finished his career with 136 tackles, 15 for loss and 6.5 sacks.
Bazata’s efforts his senior year earned him Honorable Mention All-Big 10 honors.
