ELM CREEK-  In the second night of the High School Basketball season, it was an intriguing matchup between Southern Valley and Elm Creek on KRVN. The Buffaloes were playing their first home games of the season and got the results they were looking for. In the girl’s game, Elm Creek took down Southern Valley 51-31 and in the boy’s game, the Buffaloes beat the Eagles 52-41.

In the girl’s contest, it was a game that was tightly contested until the third quarter of play. Elm Creek came away with a 14-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Southern Valley got within one point late in the second period as Elm Creek led 17-16, but Elm Creek went on a run before the intermission and led 25-18 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Elm Creek opened the game up by outscoring the Eagles 16-5 and entering the final quarter the score read 41-23. In that final quarter, Elm Creek maintained that lead by outscoring Southern Valley 10-8 to close the game.

Elm Creek was led by Allie Bauer as she recorded 18 points and Haley Stone added 15. Southern Valley was paced by eight points from Kynlee Marquez and Grace Hogeland. Elm Creek is now 2-0 and will face Alma on Tuesday. Southern Valley falls to 0-2 and will take on Cambridge on Tuesday.

In the boy’s game, it was a battle of fast-paced teams that were both looking for their second victories of the season. Elm Creek took the early advantage with a 13-6 lead in the first. Elm Creek looked as if they were going to coast after the second quarter as they led 30-14 at halftime, but a big third quarter from the Eagles had the game at 43-30 heading into the fourth with Elm Creek leading.

In the final quarter, Southern Valley attempted to finish the comeback bid but couldn’t complete it as they fell 52-41. Elm Creek was led by Trey Miner as he poured in 15 points. Southern Valley was led by 12 points from Jaden Quinn. Elm Creek moves to 2-0 and they will play Alma on Tuesday. Southern Valley falls to 1-1 with a rivalry game against Cambridge on Tuesday.
