Hastings – It was the true home opener for the Hastings College volleyball team and No. 1 Midland came to town and defeated the Lady Broncos in four sets 25-19, 20-25, 21-25, 22-25 on Wednesday night at Lynn Farrell Arena. Hastings got off to a great start as everything appeared to be clicking early on. The Lady Broncos jumped all over the Warriors leading 10-6, Hastings would open up a 15-8 lead off of multiple MU errors and an Andrea Jameson (JR/Roca, NE) kill. That lead would not get to less than five points for the rest of the set as Hastings closed it out on an error by the Warriors to win 25-19.
Unfortunately for the Broncos, the tide would turn in favor of the Warriors early in set two as Hastings had a 5-2 lead but MU would run off four straight points to take a 6-5 lead. The Lady Broncos would only be able to tie the game on the next point at 6-6 before Midland would slowly pull away for the set two win. Set three took another mid-game turn in favor of the Warriors as Hastings again had an early 8-4 lead but Midland would steadily close the gap and end up with a 12-9 lead and never looked back.
Hastings was led by Sage Meyer (SO/Bellevue, NE) as she finished with 14 kills while hitting .289. Katie Placke (JR/Grand Island, NE) and Jennifer Klaudt (SR/Ashland, NE) each added 10 kills. Priscilla O’Dowd led the way for the Warriors as she finished with a match high 17 kills. Placke also finished the night with 24 assists while Jill Bax (JR/Lincoln, NE) led the Broncos with 21 digs. Hastings also finished with 15 blocks compared to just seven for Midland. Hastings is now 6-2 (1-1) on the year and will be back in action Friday Sept. 9 as Montana Western comes to town with first serve set for 1:00 p.m. at Lynn Farrell Arena.
